Make Paint from Berries

Make watercolor paints with berries that you pick or buy.

Materials

Apron or old shirt
Berries, 1/2 cup blueberries and 1/2 cup raspberries
Bowls, small, two per color
Permanent black marker
Newspaper
Paint brush
Paper
Potato masher
Strainer

Steps

Protect your work area.

Berry juice can stain, so be sure to place newspaper over your work area. Wear aprons.

Make your paints.

Put 1/2 cup of blueberries in a bowl. Add 1/4 cup of water. Mash with the potato masher until juicy.

Strain your berry mixture so you just have liquid.

Put your strainer over the second bowl and pour in your mashed berries. This is your purple (blue) watercolor. Repeat this process for your red berries.

Draw a picture with permanent black marker on thick paper.
Make it look like a picture you might color in with crayons, a line drawing.

Paint the paper with your berry paints.
Wash your brush in water between colors or everything will be purple.

You can also paint with berries outside on rocks.
Find some berries and mash them up. Paint on rocks with your hands.

You can pretend to make rock paintings like ancient peoples!
