Make Your Own Watercolor Paints

Make your own watercolor paints with the berries you pick.

What You Need:

  • Newspaper to cover your work area
  • 2 aprons
  • 1 black marker
  • 1 sheet watercolor art paper
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ½ cup strawberries or raspberries
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 potato masher
  • 1 medium-size bowl
  • 1 strainer
  • 1 paintbrush
  • 1 glass of water for rinsing paintbrush
  • 2 plastic margarine tubs

What You Do:

  1. Berry juice can stain, so be sure to place newspaper over your work area. For additional protection, both you and your child should wear aprons.
  2. Using a black marker, draw the outline of a picture on the watercolor paper.
  3. Put ½ cup of blueberries into the bowl. Add ¼ cup of water.
  4. Mash with the potato masher until juicy.
  5. Place the strainer over a margarine tub. Strain the berry mixture so that the juice goes into the tub. This is your purple (blue) watercolor.
  6. Repeat this process for your red berries. Consider using other colored berries to produce additional watercolors.
