Agnes Scott College, Decatur

As part of our mission to live honorably, we accept the challenge of environmental stewardship, commit to education and leadership in sustainability and seek to balance what the college takes from and returns to the world’s natural resources.  Our goal is to be climate neutral by the year 2037.  We have already submitted our Climate Action Plan to the ACUPCC and are currently drafting our Sustainability Plan.

Berry College, Mount Berry

"We are proud of the work that has been done to make Berry one of the top green colleges in the nation," said Eddie Elsberry, director of environmental compliance and sustainability. "Faculty, staff and students have all made significant contributions to this effort." Berry college has many sustainable initiatives and programs in place that range from Agroforestry, to reintroduction of Longleaf Pines and American Chestnuts to the area, to BioMass fuel to offset "dirty" coal energy consumption for local industry,  to Biodiesel  fuel production and use in Agriculture, and this fall plan to open the first Berry Environmental Living and Learning housing (BELL) for Students. " Berry College is making a difference in the environmental practices of the world, both by exhibiting those practices on campus and by teaching them for students to use as they graduate" said Elsberry.

Brenau University, Gainesville

Brenau University is gearing up for a very sustainable Earth Month! Among other things, students and faculty are planning an energy-saving competition; we are launching a battery-recycling program; and will be collaborating with our surrounding community to bring in speakers about sustainable practices in business. We are hard at work to bring the three legs of sustainability to life - environment, engagement and economy!

Clayton State University, Morrow

Dining Sustainability Website

Clayton State University is in the process of retrofitting their buildings with sensors and meters to help monitor and conserve energy on campus.  In May 2011, the campus piloted a new single stream recycling program.  The plan is to gradually expand the program campus-wide to all buildings. This program should help CSU significantly increase the total amount of campus waste that is recycled, resulting in cost savings associated with waste disposal.

Emory University, Atlanta

Emory's sustainability vision is to help restore the global ecosystem, foster healthy living, and reduce the University's impact on the local environment. Progress will be measured using the environmental, economic, and social "triple bottom line" of sustainability.  Near-term efforts include reducing energy use by 25% per square foot from 2005 levels by 2015, purchasing 75% local or sustainable food for our hospitals and campus cafeterias by 2015, and continuing our leadership in green building.

Georgia College & State University, Milledgeville

With greater awareness of the environmental challenges that affect us locally and globally, Georgia College has renewed its commitment to taking stock of its own environmental impact and exploring ways in which the university community can enhance the environmental sustainability of our campus.  The Sustainability Council at Georgia College is responsible for identifying and promoting actions and initiatives that will enhance sustainability on campus.  Our major program is the Green Initiative, an ongoing effort to incorporate the principles of sustainability and environmental planning into the short and long-term activities of our university and to share our knowledge with the surrounding community to help make our world more ecologically responsible.

Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville

GGC’s Sustainability Committee and Environmental Club drive and create awareness of campus sustainability initiatives as well as promote environmental sustainability as an institutional way of operating. We work to holistically integrate all individuals and ideas of the GGC community to shape a legacy of ecological stewardship on our campus and beyond.

Georgia Highlands College, Rome

Green Highlands Website

Green Highlands is a student organization at Georgia Highlands College.  This organization’s main objective is to promote sustainable lifestyles among the members of the college community and the surrounding area.  Environmentally driven students and advisors have collaborated with various agencies and groups to establish recycling programs at all GHC instructional sites.  In hopes of reaching the surrounding community, Green Highlands promotes educational material at a number of local community events such as, CelEARTHbration, Relay for Life, and the annual Gene Thacker Memorial Clean-Up.  The group provides local citizens information on community recycling programs, water conservation and share easy ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

 

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta

Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems

Georgia Institute of Technology has been repeatedly ranked among the most sustainable colleges in the U.S. in recent years.  Current initiatives include increasing native plants and tree canopy on campus, building energy efficiency improvements, sustainable dining efforts, and construction of a new undergraduate learning center that will feature a green roof and one of the nation’s largest underground water cisterns.  Tech also hosts the largest Earth Day celebration in the Southeast, attracting thousands of participants every year.

Georgia Perimeter College, Multiple Locations in Metro Atlanta

Atlanta Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning

At over 26,000 students, Georgia Perimeter College is the largest 2-year institution in Georgia and embraces it mission as an access institution. Recently, GPC has integrated sustainability principles and sustainability literacy within its college-wide culture of civic engagement and service learning. In Sept 2010, President Anthony Tricoli convened a Presidential Task Force for Sustainable Living and Environmental Studies to help the GPC establish its initial “footprint” towards building a more sustainable college. Under the leadership of Dr. Joanne Chu, Director of Sustainable Living and Environmental Studies, Dr. Chu and the Task Force are in the process of establishing sustainability policies and principles within the curriculum, co-curricular activities, facilities management, institutional planning and communications across all of its five campuses located in the Metro Atlanta Area. GPC dedicated to reducing it GPC's carbon footprint and promoting sustainability literacy for all GPC students.

Georgia Southern University, Statesboro

Center for Sustainability

Georgia Southern University is a Presidents Climate Commitment signatory, with an Interdisciplinary Concentration in Environmental Sustainability, a LEED certified Recreation Activities Center, and a water re-use system to irrigate its playing fields. A campus goal is for all new building projects to use sustainable construction practices and promote a sustainable end product.  Student action projects (e.g. re-lamping of all campus offices with compact fluorescent lights, a car tire inflation campaign, construction of a bio-swale to reduce pollution in runoff) help to improve campus sustainability. A tri-annual speaker series brings in sustainability experts from around the country to educate and inspire the campus and community.

Georgia State University, Atlanta

Georgia State University has focused on reducing its energy use, increasing water conservation, limiting hazardous chemicals in cleaning, increasing sustainability in the curriculum, and increasing recycling. Georgia State hosts a monthly Green Bag Lunch of sustainability speakers and has four major student groups, the Sustainable Energy Tribe, the Green People, GSU Bikes, and the Environmental Law Society. GSU Staff Council has an active Campus Sustainability Committee, and the faculty/staff group is Greening Georgia State. An annual Earth Day festival takes place in April and has its own organizing committee.

Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw

Three of KSU’s buildings have or will soon receive LEED certification. KSU’s Social Sciences building is LEED certified at the Silver level; the Commons Dining Hall has Gold LEED certification. The dining hall’s sustainability features include composting, trayless dining, and local food purchasing.  Prillaman Hall, the Health Sciences building, will soon acquire LEED designation as well.

Life University, Marietta

A Sustainable Life Blog

As part of the President’s Climate Commitment objectives, LIFE has implemented several programs on campus: campus recycling program, construction of a “zero-waste” dining facility, installation of motion sensors to control office and exam room lighting, re-evaluation of the HVAC scheduling to reduce the run times, adoption of a minimum LEED Gold standard for all new campus construction, and establishment of a carpool program and on-campus shuttle to reduce auto mileage associated with commuting.

Mercer University, Macon

Sustainable Dining Website

Mercer University has academic programs in environmental science, policy, engineering and law, plus student groups with an environmental focus on our Macon, Atlanta and Law campuses.  New buildings are built to LEEDS standards (not certified); we maximize energy efficiency whenever buildings and mechanical systems are refurbished or upgraded. 

Mercer has more than a twenty year history of effective involvement with community partners (the City of Macon, the Macon Housing Authority, Historic Macon,  the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and more recently the College Hill Alliance) in aggressively improving the urban fabric and livability of the environs of its campus and the Macon community at large.  Several Victorian-era neighborhoods surrounding the Mercer campus  have been or are currently in the process of being revitalized, with a Down Payment Assistance program that encourages faculty and staff to live in walking distance of our Macon campus.  Mercer and its neighborhood partners won the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Campus-Community Collaboration Award for the work performed on the Beall's Hill development in 2002. The Beall’s Hill Design Guidelines won the prestigious, international Charter Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism in 2005.

In partnership with a private developer, Mercer has developed Mercer Village at the eastern boundary of the campus which now houses loft apartments, a Barnes-Noble bookstore, a  pizza parlor, a Mexican restaurant, a coffee shop, a sandwich shop, a bicycle store/apparel shop,  the Macon station of Georgia Public Radio, and other businesses, all developed within the last four years.  The Village serves students and the local neighborhoods, creating the amenities of an urban environment and greatly reducing the need for repeated travel by students and neighbors alike to areas on the periphery of the city for entertainment and services.

These initiatives have proven the most effective impact the University can have on its and Macon’s environmental footprint, with social as well as ecological benefits.

North Georgia College and State University, Dahlonega

In January 2011, NGCSU's president will convene the "North Georgia Sustainability Task Force" that will officially recognize a group of faculty, staff and students that have been working to promote sustainability on our campus over the past two years.  We are currently in the process of developing a bike share program, a campus-wide "GreenFest", a semester's end goods swap and paper recycling drive and a sustainability task force web site.

South Georgia College, Douglas

South Georgia College has made great strides in recent years to improve our campus by utilizing modern sustainability measures.  Some notable examples are our 5 acre longleaf pine restoration forest area; recycling of paper, plastic, construction debris and organic landscaping waste; water conservation measures; energy conservation to include an ARRA stimulus project for lighting upgrades and retrofits campus wide.  These efforts have saved the college significant funds and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.  We remain committed to being open to any conservation opportunities that can be reasonably implemented for the sake of our current faculty/staff/student body and future generations as well.

Spelman College, Atlanta

Spelman College is home to one of the first LEED Silver certified dormitories built on an HBCU campus and our President, Beverly Tatum, is a signatory of the ACUPCC.  Spelman staff are currently focused on building energy efficiency improvements for many of the historic buildings and completing a carbon inventory for the campus.

University of Georgia, Athens

The Office of Sustainability develops strategic partnerships with academic and operational departments at UGA and beyond to coordinate, communicate and advance sustainability initiatives.  UGA is actively participating in the Governor's Energy Challenge to reduce energy consumption per square foot by 15% by the year 2020.  Sustainability Initiatives are dispersed throughout the campus, including landscaping, construction, building operations and research.
