Our Work Using State Wildlife Action Plans to Prepare for Climate Change

Morro Bay Estuary

State Wildlife Action Plans are an important tool used by state wildlife agencies to identify and protect the wildlife and habitat that need our help the most. NWF is working to ensure that state agencies consider climate threats to wildlife (e.g. sea level rise, changes in temperature, and changes in precipitation) when planning conservation activities.

Protecting Wildlife from Climate Change

With support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation NWF is partnering with wildlife agencies in three pilot states (New York, Virginia, and Washington) to make sure that their State Wildlife Action Plans address potential impacts from climate change.

Our efforts include:

  1. Hosting workshops across the country on updating State Wildlife Action Plans.
  2. Conducting vulnerability assessments in pilot states to understand how climate change will affect wildlife and habitat.
  3. Developing a model for including wildlife in state adaptation plans.
  4. Organizing and energizing coalitions like Teaming with Wildlife across the country to support climate change adaptation and update State Wildlife Action Plans.
  5. Sharing information and lessons learned about climate change adaptation.
