Policy Solutions

Capitol Dome

National Wildlife Federation strives to promote solutions to climate change impacts on people and wildlife here in the United States and around the world.

We advocate for policies that will:

  • Help the world adapt to climate impacts.
  • Reduce deforestation.
  • Transition to a clean energy economy.

Global warming seriously threatens the survival of many of our most cherished wildlife species and their habitats, and jeopardizes the health and livelihoods of many people and communities.

It's imperative that we work together and act now to advance fair and equitable solutions to avoid the most dangerous and irreversible effects of global warming, and to safeguard people and wildlife from current and future impacts that already are unavoidable.

Explore our work to advocate for policies that protect wildlife from the impacts of global warming...

Strong Climate and Energy Policies

  • Federal Climate Policy - What can U.S. decision-makers do to put America on a path to energy independence and pass strong global warming legislation? We lay out what makes "strong" strong, and also detail recent actions on the federal level.

  • International Climate Treaty - NWF works with a coalition of environmental organizations around the world to push for the adoption of a new international climate change agreement under which all nations cooperate to avoid dangerous global warming.

  • Renewable Fuels and Energy - Wind, solar, geothermal and biomass energy are essential to helping reduce the impacts of climate change on our natural world. We support the expansion of clean energy sources and at the same time work to guide renewable energy production and transmission lines away from critical environmental areas.

  • Dirty Fuels - NWF is working to stop the production of dirty fuels before they become America's new energy addiction. Dirty fuels are mainly transportation fuels made from crude oil extracted from tar sands and oil shale or produced by liquefying coal.

Healthy Forests, Healthy Farms

  • Domestic Forests - How we manage our forests is closely linked to the amount of global warming pollution we produce. We work to ensure federal climate legislation takes this into account.

  • Forest Products - Many forest products originate from illegal logging activities, unsustainable or poorly managed forest, or are agricultural commodities derived from deforestation. NWF works to encourage the production and sales of more sustainable forest products.

  • Tropical Deforestation - Because of the immense amount of carbon stored in tropical forests, deforestation is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. NWF works to ensure that U.S. federal climate legislation and any international global warming agreement work together to provide the incentives necessary for conserving tropical forests.

  • Biomass Energy - Among the renewable energy options, biomass energy has a great deal of promise in replacing dirty fuels. How can we encourage its use while at the same time ensuring sustainable land use?

  • Sustainable Farming Practices - NWF works to help farmers and ranchers protect and conserve wildlife habitat while at the same time expanding renewable energy production in a sustainable way.

  • Sustainable Biofuels - We are involved in a number of initiatives to ensure that the next generation of biofuels and biomass energy can be used to help curb global warming, while being produced in a sustainable manner.

Safeguarding Wildlife and Habitat

  • Funding for Wildlife and Ecosystems - NWF works to ensure federal, state and tribal wildlife agencies are funded to protect wildlife from global warming.

  • Endangered Species Act - The fate of wildlife and ecosystems hinges on the willingness and ability of policymakers and natural resource managers to confront global warming-related threats. NWF advocates for significantly strengthening Endangered Species Act programs--as well as increasing Endangered Species Act funding--to help fulfill the nation's commitment to conserve abundant wildlife and healthy ecosystems for future generations.

  • Coast and Floodplain Protection - Even as our coasts and floodplains become riskier environments in which to live, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is subsidizing and otherwise encouraging high-risk and damaging development in these vulnerable areas. NWF advocates for smarter floodplain management and coastal protections.

  • Updating Conservation Laws - Federal, state and local laws governing natural resources management and conservation in the United States largely fail to account for climate change. We not only advocate for policies to provide more funding to resource managers--we also organize and train managers to take into account the new threats wildlife faces in the near future.

  • Renewable Energy Siting  We are actively working to minimize the impact of any energy source on wildlife in any legislative and administrative renewable energy proposals.
