International Climate Treaty

While the United States should be a leader in confronting global warming, no one nation can solve this problem alone.

NWF works with a coalition of environmental organizations around the world to push for the adoption of a new international climate change agreement under which all nations cooperate to avoid dangerous global warming.

In such an agreement:

  • Wealthy countries must provide financial resources to help developing nations prepare for the harm caused by unavoidable climate change--known as "adaptation"--and to help them develop their economies on a low-carbon pathway.

  • The protection of the world's forests should be a priority. The combined global greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and agriculture are enormous, amounting to more than the total from all the cars, trucks, airplanes and ships in the world.

  • Sustainable management of forests and croplands must also be a part of the solution to avoiding dangerous climate change.
