School Grounds Pathway Objectives and Learning Outcomes
Objectives
- To develop students' understanding of natural systems in their community through hands-on inquiry
- To develop students' understanding of social systems and their community's characteristics
- To explore the interrelationships and interactions among natural systems and their components
- To support students as they undertake and monitor service-learning activities
- To provide hands-on learning experiences, often through problem-solving and project-based activities
- To create a continuum of learning that crosses grade levels and allows students to conduct multi-year research and service-learning projects that contribute to their community
- To encourage the use of higher-level thinking and creative problem solving skills
Learning Outcomes
Through work with the School Grounds Pathway, students will:
- Develop advanced skills leading to discovery and real-world problem solving
- Develop knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for the environment, community, and natural surroundings
- Carry out an audit of the school grounds
- Collect, interpret, and present information
- Communicate about strategies to improve school grounds to a variety of audiences, including other students, parents and the local community
- Work cooperatively with others
