Global Warming is Well-Documented

Scientists from the United States and around the world have been observing our climate system and studying how global warming works for decades. They have used a wide array of observing systems—from satellites to surface stations to ocean buoys—as well as indicators of past climate from ice cores, tree rings, corals, and sediments to reconstruct past climate. They have developed complex global climate models to represent each component of the Earth system—atmosphere, oceans, and land surface—and how these components interact, especially as global warming pollution increases.

Thousands of papers have been published in the scientific literature examining all facets of climate science. This body of work has then been synthesized in numerous assessment reports intended to highlight the important findings where the scientific community agrees and to provide critical information for decision makers. The most notable of these assessment efforts is conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Scientific societies and academies have also adopted statements characterizing the views of their membership on global warming. These include the American Geophysical Union (AGU, the world’s pre-eminent professional society for climate scientists), the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Furthermore, the science academies of the world’s leading economies have issued several statements intended to inform international policy discussions.
