Volunteer at Hike & Seek

Interested in volunteering for one of our Hike & Seek locations? Please email us at hike@nwf.org with “volunteer” in the subject line and include the location where you would like to volunteer.

Also, be sure to check out our volunteer job descriptions below. If you would like to be placed in a particular position, just let us know in the email. Please also indicate if you have any physical limitations.

 

Basecamp & Entry Road Set-Up

  • Assist with sound system setup
  • Set up tents for registration, Meet NWF, etc.
  • Set up signage at Basecamp and along the roads
  • Stage and organize materials under tents

Trail Set-Up/Breakdown

  • Set up/break down event signage and supplies along the trails

Parking Volunteers

  • Direct participants from parking area to Basecamp area

Volunteer Check-In

  • Greet volunteer staff--inform them of their task/area of responsibility
  • Hand out volunteer t-shirt
  • Confirm email address from list
  • Give them Official Volunteer lanyard
  • Address any questions volunteers may have

Registration/Check-In

  • Help set up and organize registration tables and tents
  • Help those who have pre-registered and paid
  • Help walk-ups register for the event and answer any questions they may have
  • Direct all participants to pick up their guidebook and to the children’s activity area

Guidebook Pick-up

  • Manage the staggered start color system and relay information to trail head
  • Give each child a Map & Mission Guidebook and pencil
  • Explain the flow of how the day will run
  • Explain staggered starts to participants 

Runner

  • Relays messages between registration tent and the trail head

Stop & Study Station Leader

  • Lead station activity and assist other volunteers with knowledge of topic (the five stations are related to one of the following: mammals, insects, plants, birds, amphibians).  *Station Lead must have moderate to advanced knowledge on the station topic.
  • Review activities that will be conducted
  • Greet children and parents as they come to your station
  • Clean up station once the last group has cleared your station

Stop & Study Station Assistants

  • Review activities that will be conducted
  • Greet children and parents as they come to your station
  • Assist Stop & Study Station Leads in activity and answer any questions children/adult companions may have
  • Clean up station once the last group has cleared your station

Trail Rover/Route Marshall

  • Walk trails (1-2 miles). In some locations, bicycles will be utilized.
  • Direct people to next Stop & Study station
  • Help identify wildlife or items on scavenger hunt list
  • Pick up trash off the trails, if needed
  • Run supplies to Stop & Study station should they need additional supplies
  • Check on water supply at hydration station, refill as necessary 

Ranger Rick

  • Ranger Rick (in costume) remain silent; greet children with lots of hand gestures/animation

Ranger Rick Handler

  • Make sure Ranger Rick is safely led from one location to another
  • Watch Ranger Rick’s tail
  • Act as the voice of Ranger Rick
  • Ensure Ranger Rick has been given a few moments rest

Face Painter

  • Paint children's faces using stencils we provide.

Refreshment Area

  • Set up coffee/tea service and/or pick up beverages from local business donors
  • Fill beverage cooler(s) with water for beginning of event and replenish as needed
  • Snacks to be served as participants return to Basecamp (one fruit/one packaged snack)
  • Monitor trash receptacles and replace bags as needed

Photography

  • Take photos at Basecamp and on trail (shot list provided)
  • Coordinate with Ranger Rick and handler
  • Provide photos for NWF's website and internal use (proper credit will be made)

Children’s Area

  • Oversee the pre-event trail activities, make sure children listen to orientation
  • Lead (or assist) post-event activities and crafts

Floater

  • After volunteer completes one duty, volunteer will be positioned elsewhere as needed (e.g. registration closes and help is needed out on the trail)

Breakdown

  • Clean up stations once the last group has cleared all stations
  • Load vehicles

Crossing Guard**

  • Assist hikers with crossing road **Only needed in Central Park, NY location
