Is Your Child Ready for Ranger Rick?
Children who have outgrown Big Backyard will love Ranger Rick, the #1 nature magazine for kids ages 7–14.
If your child can do these things, it may be time to move from Big Backyard to Ranger Rick:
- Can read a longer story, such as a chapter book, and answer these questions about it: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.
- Can read a simple story independently.
- Can retell the events of a fairly complicated story.
- Can write complete sentences, capitalizing the first words and using appropriate ending punctuation. May not use correct spelling yet.
- Can count to 100 by ones, twos, fives and tens.
- Can add and subtract double-digit numbers.
- Can alphabetize simple three- and four-letter words.
- Uses fine motor skills to hold a pencil correctly, tie own shoes and cut out complex shapes such as snowflakes and paper dolls.
- "Gets" jokes that use word play, such as knock-knocks and riddles.
