Bug Hunting Fun

Summer is a great time to see some flying insects for yourself. So grab a friend and get outside!

Here are some tips:

Boy in the field

1. Take along: an insect field guide to identify your discoveries and a journal and pencil to note them down. A hand lens (or magnifying glass) and a camera might be useful, too.

2. Investigate things such as:

  • How many different kinds of flying insects can you find?
  • Is it easy or hard to see their wings?
  • Do they have one pair of wings or two?
  • Are they fluttery fliers or super zoomers?
  • Do their flapping wings make any sound?

3. Keep a list and add to it throughout the summer as different insects come and go.
