Eel-ementary!

Ranger Rick with a camera

Moray eels, American eels, electric eels, wolf eels—all kinds of fish have eel-shaped bodies. Just check these out:

Gulper eel
This eel has a huge, pelican-like mouth that—you guessed it!—gulps its food. It can actually unhinge its big jaws and stretch its stomach so wide that it can eat a fish that’s almost as big as itself!

Eelpout
Not really an eel, this fish has a weak skeleton and not much muscle. To stay safe, it curls up into a big O shape. Some scientists think that helps the fish disguise itself to keep from being eaten.

Snipe eel
These eels look like underwater birds with their funny beaks. Inside the beaks are tiny, hooked teeth. As an eel sweeps its open beak through the water, its teeth snag yummy shrimp.

Isn’t nature WILD?
