Lion Bytes

lion roar

The lion is one of the most incredible Big Cats on the planet. Read on for more.

  • Lions live in Africa and in western India.

  • Lions are the only cats to hang out in large family groups (called prides).

  • Female lions in a pride are closely related, often staying near each other for many years.

  • Lion litters usually have two or three cubs--but may include as many as seven.

  • A lion’s golden coat blends in well with the grassy plains and open woodlands where the big cat lives.

  • Lions “talk” to each other with many calls, including roars, chuffs, and grunts.

  • Male lions are the only cats that have manes.

  • A mane may send a signal to a rival male, saying “See how big and strong I am? Better not come any closer.”
