She's a Winner!
The editors of Ranger Rick magazine would like to introduce Pamela Bucklinger. Pam works at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. After years of working with kids who visit the zoo, she knows the kinds of activities that inspire them to want to learn more.
One of Pam's favorite lessons was helping students make a paper-mache zebra, decked out with stripes and even including internal paper organs. The highlight of the activity was putting it in the Great Cats exhibit and watching the lions attack it!
Pam is a vegetarian herself, but she loves to learn about the diets of meat-eating animals. "The grosser, the better," she says, "and nothing is nastier than the food habits of vultures!" Making a living by feeding on dead animals is exactly the kind of subject Pam enjoys writing about most. That's why she wrote a story for last November's issue of Ranger Rick called "Boning Up on Vultures." She did such a good job that the editors decided to give her the "Trudy Farrand and John Strohm Magazine Writing Award" for 2011. This award is named after two great people. Trudy Farrand was Ranger Rick's first editor. And John Strohm was the first editor of National Wildlife magazine.
When not on the job at the zoo or busy writing, Pam lives in downtown Washington, D.C., with her husband, Jeff. They have one nature-loving son and two adopted rabbits.
Congratulations, Pam!
