Arctic Foxes

Arctic fox pup

Arctic foxes have short brownish fur in the summer. In winter, they have long, thick white fur. Arctic foxes eat everything! They feed on small mammals, such as lemmings, eggs, berries, birds, fish, and carrion.

In winter, arctic foxes will follow polar bears around to eat their leftovers.

More facts about arctic foxes:

  • Arctic fox babies are called either pups or kits.
  • Arctic fox pups are born inside an underground den.
  • Arctic foxes can give birth to 6 to 12 pups.
  • Both the mom and the dad will take care of the pups.
  • Arctic foxes sleep curled in a ball, with their tails over their noses.

The Arctic is not just one piece of land. It's a whole area between the North Pole and the northern timberlines of North America and Eurasia.

In the summer, the sun shines all the time in the Arctic. Even then it is cold. It doesn't get warmer than 60 degrees F.

The longest seasons of the Arctic are summer and winter. Spring and fall are really short.

The Arctic is like a cold, cold desert. It doesn't rain much. Underground, there is a layer of soil that is always frozen. It's called permafrost.
