Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Habitat Steward and Host, Broward County Community Wildlife Habitat Team Member, Greater Ft. Lauderdale Flyway Cities Coalition Coordinator, 2007 NWF Community Volunteer of the Year, and Frogwatcher.
I am a Natural Resource Specialist with the NatureScape Broward program of Broward County’s Natural Resources Planning and Management Division. In this capacity, it has been my pleasure to work closely with the staff at National Wildlife Federation and to promote their valuable programs in South Florida. I am involved with the implementation of approximately 70 programs and outreach events each year, help create new publications and outreach materials, and coordinate volunteer trainings and activities.
Broward County is home to 1.6 million people and 31 cities. We have challenges of habitat loss, exotic species, meeting water demands, and the effects of climate change. We recognize the importance of NWF programs in helping us to meet these challenges and engage residents and students in education and action.
Over the past 5 years, I have hosted 6 Habitat Steward Trainings for Broward County residents and 3 Habitat Steward Trainings for Broward County Public School Teachers, graduating over 150 Stewards. All eight of the NatureScape Broward staff and many other County employees are now Habitat Stewards. Together, we are a solid team of tree huggers, nature lovers, and environmental educators.
Broward County has over 2, 050 Certified Wildlife Habitats, 76 of these are schools. We were certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat in 2005. Broward County now has 5 certified cities and 4 registered cities. Last year NWF designated us as a Flyway City and we formed the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Flyway Cities Coalition with members representing 60 agencies and organizations. This new initiative by NWF brings awareness to the importance of habitat for migratory birds and migratory marine species, such as sea turtles, West Indian manatees, and fish.
I am very pleased to be considered part of the NWF Family and proud to represent NWF in our area. I continue to grow as a steward of the environment and thank the great staff at NWF for all their support.
