National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is teaming up with Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) and New Line Cinema for the Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The film opens in theaters and IMAX® 3D December 14. As the education partner for the film, the National Wildlife Federation is providing online resources to help students, educators, parents and individuals start their own unexpected journey outdoors and is hosting a sweepstakes for a complimentary private screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The sweepstakes deadline is 11:59 p.m. on December 13. Enter on NWF’s website www.nwf.org/thehobbit

The movie adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest that takes him and his companions into the Wild! But like all Hobbits, Bilbo prefers to stay at home. They call the place where they live "the Shire." They love to be in nature, to grow food and tend their gardens. NWF will encourage students and adults to take actions to “green their shires,” or their own community, through NWF programs, such as Certified Wildlife Habitat® and Schoolyard Habitats.

Students, teachers and individuals are encouraged to enter NWF’s “Green Your Shire Sweepstakes” at www.nwf.org/thehobbit and describe what actions they or their class, school, community group or family are taking to improve the environment - at school, at home or in the community. Individuals could win a private screening for up to one hundred friends and group members or 2 runners-up will receive family 4-pack of tickets to see the film in IMAX®.

“We hope the popularity of the film series and the themes of courage and nature’s beauty will inspire moviegoers and fans of the book to do something to make our Earth a greener place,” says Carey Stanton, NWF’s senior director for education.
Just as the adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins and his companions into the “Wild,” NWF provides loads of fun outdoor activities and online tools to locate parks, campgrounds, nature centers, zoos, and other places to explore the outdoors. See how to make being outdoors an easy, fun and healthy part of everyday life and learn what actions you can take to help the environment.
