Snapping turtle

WHILE CROSSING A SHALLOW STREAM during summer in a park in Columbus, Ohio, Sarah Rose nearly stepped on this common snapping turtle. “At first, I thought it was a rock but quickly realized it was a shell and immediately backed off,” recalls Rose, who was working on an urban wildlife research project at the time. The young turtle, she says, “allowed me to take several close-up pictures.”
