Mississippi Sandhill Crane Update 10-12-05

The cranes are pulling through

10-01-2005 // NWF Staff

Scott Hereford, a biologist at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge--home to the sole surviving wild population of this crane subspecies--wrote in a recent email that all 32 cranes radio-tagged before Katrina have been accounted for. "I expect most of the cranes to pull through, but it may take time to determine as most of our field structures, including blinds, were damaged by Katrina's winds," he writes. To learn more about the refuge's flock, read " Hovering on the Edge of Existence."
