Forty Years of Extraordinary Images
A review of some of the editors' favorite photographs from the magazine's four decades of publishing
THIS ISSUE marks the end of the 40th year of National Wildlife. During the past four decades, the magazine has published more than 11,000 photographs, selected from at least two million images submitted by more than 3,000 photographers. So imagine the challenge the editors faced in trying to choose the most dramatic and memorable pictures that have appeared in our pages since 1962. Following are several of our favorites. Some were selected because of the editorial points they made when they were published; others because they generated tremendous reader responses; and some simply because they are beautiful photos.
