Balanced Rock in Arches by Durand Johnson

Balanced Rock in Arches National Park, Utah, is often photographed during the day; a night view offers an entirely different perspective.  Durand Johnson worked to get this image of Sirius and the constellation Orion over the famous rock.  He writes, “Balanced Rock was lit for a few seconds with a 2-million-candlepower spotlight to illuminate the foreground of the photo. A homemade tracking platform was used to eliminate ‘star trails’ due to Earth’s movement.”  Johnson used a Canon EOS 5D, a 24mm lens, a tripod and star filter.
