Yosemite quail in snow

Yosemite quail by Jerry James

Jerry James was walking with his wife in Yosemite Valley, California, after a heavy overnight snowfall.  They came upon a covey of quail.  He writes, “They quickly dispersed into the woods but we could hear them.  Since I could not see any clearly enough to photograph, I just waited a few minutes to see what developed.  Then three of them flew to a branch weighted down with snow.”  The California resident used a Canon 40D, a 400mm lens used at maximum aperture because of the overcast, and a tripod.
