Least tern with chick, Long Island, New York

"Least terns are a threatened species in New York State," says photographer Johann Schumacher. "Though on this suburban public beach their nesting grounds are protected, they are nevertheless severely pressed, not the least by an aggressive cohort of gulls." The New York resident found this adult least tern hovering over her lone remaining chick on Long Island. "For me, this image symbolizes the fierce determination of these elegant shorebirds to protect their progeny despite formidable odds."
