Photo of the Week: Sparring Bachelors

09-10-2012 // NWF Staff

Richard Coke was at the headwaters of the first real flood in the Savuti Channel of Botswana in many years. It was late summer and a herd of bachelor giraffes moved down the slope to the water’s edge. He writes, “These two bulls started sparring. They were not being aggressive, but gentle, as if it were a dance. The dark clouds of the distant thunderstorm really accentuated their coats’ colours.” The Cape Town, South Africa, resident used a Nikon D300 and a 20-400mm lens.
