Photo of the Week: The Fishing Bat

10-28-2013 // NWF Staff

Fishing Bat

Native to Central and South America, the fisherman bat uses echolocation to detect water ripples made by fish and then employs a pouch between its legs to scoop up the prey and sharp claws to hold on. Photographer Christian Ziegler caught this behavior in action while visiting the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s Barro Colorado Island in Panama, one of the best-studied tropical rain forests on Earth. Ziegler took the photo in an enclosure where scientists study the behavior of bats by bringing in wild individuals for a few days at a time. The Denmark resident used a Canon 5D on a tripod.
