Autumn Blue Jay

Taking photos of red maples on a beautiful day in his backyard, photographer Bill McMullen caught this blue jay a moment before the bird took flight. Ranging throughout most of the eastern and central United States and southern Canada, blue jays are highly intelligent, noisy and aggressive birds. They often benefit other bird species by alerting them to dangerous predators with alarm calls. The Ontario-based photographer made this image of a “jay posing nuthatch style” using a Canon 7D with a 400 mm lens.
