Snow Leopard

The snow leopard, a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central Asia, is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Endangered. Located high in the Himalaya Mountains Spiti in the Indian State of Himachal Pradesh has a strong local population, where in winter the cats are relatively easy to spot and photograph, notes Dhritiman Mukherjee. “This time of year, snow leopards come down to a lower altitude, and their paw marks in the snow are easy to track.” After some tracking and patience, Mukherjee took this photo of an older individual enjoying the last light before sunset. The Indian resident used a Canon 7D with a 600mm lens.
