Photo of the Week: Winter Nesting

12-30-2013 // NWF Staff

Roseate Spoonbill

The roseate spoonbill is a gregarious wading bird, a resident breeder in eastern South America and coastal regions of the Caribbean, Central America and the United States along the Gulf of Mexico. Like the flamingo, the bird’s pink color is diet-derived, and colors range from pale pink to bright magenta depending on age and location. At the Goodwin Wildlife Management Area in Florida, "winter nest-building activity provided for nice photo opportunities," says Florida photographer Jack Rogers, who used a Sony A700 camera and a 400mm lens.
