Photo of the Week: Spring Surprise

During a spring outing in Duke Forest at Duke University, North Carolina, photographer Colin Hutton happened upon what he called “this bizarre insect with the most amazing set of antennae I’ve ever seen.” What he saw was the short-lived, winged adult male glowworm beetle, which has a featherlike antennae to detect pheromones in the female. The North Carolina resident used a Canon 7D camera with a 65mm lens and flash.
