Whale Sharks

Photographer Vanessa Mignon wasn’t disappointed during a whale shark observation dive into West Papua’s Cenderawasih Bay. The Australian resident writes, “They were gliding around us, truly gentle giants.” The largest living fish known, whale sharks are slow-moving filter-feeders, found only in tropical and warm-temperate oceans. The IUCN currently classifies whale sharks as a vulnerable species. Mignon used a Canon 5D Mark II camera and a 16-35mm lens in an underwater housing.
