Downy Woodpeckers take flight

Native across most of North America, the downy woodpecker is spotted frequently at backyard feeders and in local parks. This small and active bird thrives in deciduous forested areas, foraging mainly for insects on trees, but also eating berries and seeds. In her backyard, Hazel Erikson spotted two of the woodpeckers vying for a suet feeder, and then snapped a photo of this one taking flight. The Tennessee resident used a Canon 40D with a 100-400mm lens.
