The Living Desert, a preserve in Palm Desert, California, was established in 1970 by the trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum when they recognized that resort development would jeopardize the local desert ecosystem and its various wildlife species. The preserve is designed to foster cooperative research, educational programs and biological studies that contribute to the protection of native desert species. While visiting the preserve, photographer Lyndel Morgan found this Anna’s Hummingbird, a species known for its bronze-green back, pale grey chest and belly and green flanks. The California resident used a Sony DSC-H3 camera.
