Photo of the Week: People's Choice Winner

04-08-2014 // NWF Staff

It’s that time of year! National Wildlife’s 44th annual Photo Contest opened at the beginning of April, and voting for People’s Choice begins this week, on April 7th. This portrait of a captive African lion received more votes from the public than any other in last year’s contest. As part of a photography class, Jennifer Kohlman was working on a documentary book focused on the cats of St. Paul, Minnesota’s Como Park Zoo and Conservancy when she took the shot. To make the image, she stood above the animal “watching and waiting until he saw me,” she says. “When our eyes locked, it was as if no one else was around, and time had just stopped.” The Minnesota resident used a Nikon D200 and a 300mm lens.
