Hawksbill Turtle

May 23rd is World Turtle Day! Sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue, the day creates awareness of turtle and tortoise conservation issues, highlighting ways each of us can help protect these jeopardized reptiles. The world’s seven sea turtle species are among the most endangered animals on the planet. Hawksbills are classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Though the species has a worldwide distribution, its survival is threatened by destructive industrial fishing practices. This hawksbill was photographed in Juno Beach, Florida, by Cindy Messinger using a Canon T1i with a 100-400mm lens. .
