Orangutans

International Orangutan Day is this week! Inaugurated in 2013, August 19th is the day that we recognize this most-iconic victim of deforestation and highlight the need for public action in preserving the species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature currently lists the Bornean orangutan as endangered and the Sumatran orangutan as critically endangered. Photographer Ken Conger took this image of a mother and baby Bornean orangutan at Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesia. The Virginia resident used a Canon 1DX with a 70-200mm lens.
