We tracked the male cheetah for quite some time. After a failed first attempt at a meal, he had success on his second try, taking down a young Kudu. While he was regaining some energy to eat his meal, a female leopard caught the scent of the kill and made her way over to steal from the cheetah. Everyone, including our guide who is a lifelong bushman, expected the cheetah to stand down and defer to the leopard since she is higher on the predator hierarchy. Much to our surprise, the cheetah tried very hard to defend his kill and a brief, but hair-raising, encounter took place between the two cats. Ultimately the leopard prevailed and stole the cheetah's kill. Neither cat was hurt in the scuffle and the cheetah did successfully kill - and eat - later that same day.
