Field Trip Information:

We have three optional field trips set up for Tuesday, September 29th. Space is limited, so sign up early:

Field Trip option 1: Full day tour of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area and Meadow Springs Ranch

  • Tuesday, September 29th; leaves at 8am and returns between 3 and 4pm
  • $50.00 per person (includes a boxed lunch)
  • Description: The City of Fort Collins manages over 50,000 acres of short-grass prairie and shrublands along the Rocky Mountain Front near the Wyoming border. This area supports a rich array of grassland-dependent wildlife, and is managed for multiple objectives. Experience the breath-taking landscaped and diversity of life, while learning from local experts about the special history of this place, both old and new, and the challenges of keeping the prairie intact in the 21st century. This trip also includes a visit to nearby Meadow Springs Ranch, a working cattle ranch which is also managed by the City of Fort Collins as part of their wastewater treatment process.

Field Trip option 2: Half Day Tour of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area

  • Tuesday, September 29th; leaves at 8am and returns between 12 and 1pm
  • $30.00 per person (includes a boxed lunch)
  • Description: This group will join the full day tour described above on their trip to Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, and then will depart mid-day and return to Fort Collins instead of continuing on to Meadow Springs Ranch.

Field Trip option 3
: Full Day Tour of Pawnee National Grasslands

  • Tuesday, September 29th; leaves at 8am and returns between 3 and 4pm
  • $50.00 per person (includes a boxed lunch)
  • Description: Spend a day exploring the native shortgrass prairie of the western High Plains with local grassland managers and researchers. The tour will leave at 8am and return between 3-4pm, in time for the conference opening reception. Learn about collaborative grazing management, research, and grassland birds and wildlife as we tour the Central Plains Experimental Range and Pawnee National Grasslands with trip leaders David Augustine (USDA-ARS), Hailey Wilmer (Colorado State University), and staff from Pawnee National Grassland and Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory.
