02/28/12 - Senate Agriculture Committee Holds Conservation Hearing: On Tuesday, February 28th, the Senate Agriculture Committee conducted a hearing on "Strengthening Conservation through the US Farm Bill." The hearing was the second held by the Senate Agriculture Committee as it moves towards reauthorization of the Farm Bill. The hearing was divided into two panels; the witnesses on the first panel were the heads of USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Farm Service Agency (FSA), while the second panel included three farmers and three representatives from national non-profit organizations. All of the witnesses testified to the value of Farm Bill conservation programs and made a compelling case about the importance of conservation, and the fact that conservation works on the landscape. A major theme throughout the hearing was the need to focus on program simplification, consolidation, and streamlining, particularly in the current fiscal climate. There was also considerable, discussion around the future of the Conservation Reserve Program particularly given the large number of acres that are expiring this year.
