Sculpt with Sawdust Play Dough
Sawdust gives your play dough an interesting texture.
Materials
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Flour, 1-2 cups
  • Logs or branches, optional
  • Measuring Cups
  • Newspaper or tablecloth to protect your work surface
  • Power saw, optional
  • Salt, 1/2 cup
  • Sawdust, 1-2 cups
  • Spoon
  • Water, 1/2 cup
Steps
Step 1
Get about a cup of sawdust

One way to get sawdust is to take lumber and cut it with a saw. You could also visit a local wood or hardware store.

Step 2
Gather the other ingredients

You will want to mix the play dough in a location where spills are easily wiped up.

We chose to mix it in a container that we would not likely use for food in the future, in case there was any issue with sawdust being a non-edible ingredient.

Step 3
Mix the ingredients

Start with about a cup of sawdust and a cup of flour. You can add more of either if you want to play with the texture. They can be used interchangeably.

Add about 1/2 cup of salt.

Add water slowly, as needed, to get the ingredients to a dough.

Step 4
Mix with your hands

At some point, it works best to start mixing directly with your hands, to feel whether the dough is reaching a good texture.

You know you have a good texture when you can roll the dough into a hot dog or pickle shape easily without having it stick to the rolling surface or your hands.

Step 5
Add the water slowly

You would be surprised how little water is needed to make a good dough, so start very slowly.

Step 6
Make fun sculptures!

If you like your results, leave the sculptures to dry for a few days.
