Thousands of birds die each year on their migrations when hitting residential and commercial windows.

Create a haven for hummingbirds
Attract these tiny and colorful migrating birds.

Safe birdfeeding tips
The best food for birds comes from native plants, but if you offer feeders, here are some important tips.

Purchasing Actions:

Join NWF and help migratory birds
Your tax-deductible donation supports NWF's work to protect migratory birds and other imperiled wildlife. We'll acknowledge your gift with a complimentary plush animal. Thank you.

Buy bird-friendly coffee
Many birds spend the winter in South America. Help protect their homes from coffee growers. Purchasing this coffee also supports NWF.

Eastern Kingbird
During the winter months, while living in Central and South America, this flycatcher will feed mainly on fruit.

Migration Distance
1,850-6,800 miles

Migration Route and Stopover Sites
The eastern kingbird's breeding habitat ranges from British Columbia to Nova Scotia and extends south to parts of California, Texas, the Gulf Coast and Florida. In the winter the bird migrates to Amazonia, where it spends time in Columbia and Ecuador and as far south as northern Chile and Argentina.

Interesting Facts
While wintering in the tropics, eastern kingbirds, which are flycatchers, switch from a diet that consists primarily of insects to one that is primarily fruit.

The eastern kingbird is a fierce defender of its territory and will attack much larger birds as it protects its area. Its Latin name (Tyrannus tyrannus) is derived from the word "tyrannus" meaning "tyrant."
