Fellow Profile

Andrea Triplitt
Furman University, SC

The Green Room Energy and Environmental Initiative (GREEN) Showcase Room will serve as a residence hall model for students on campus to learn how simple lifestyle and product choices in their dorm rooms can significantly lessen their carbon footprint. The showcase room will house two environmentally minded students and serve as a living laboratory and model for green college living. The room will be fitted with energy saving features and environmentally friendly products and sustainable materials. The students selected to live in the room will document their experiences in green living through an online blog as well as regular features in the campus and local newspaper. The residents and I will help educate the student body about the project and through short workshops, open houses, and public tours of the space promote eco-friendly lifestyle choices and product selection. The room will also serve as an integral educational piece in Furman’s efforts towards meeting the President’s Climate Commitment of achieving carbon neutrality.

About the Fellow

I am currently a Sophomore at Furman University in Greenville, SC where I am majoring in Earth and Environmental Science with a concentration in Environmental Studies. On campus I am involved in a number of student environmental organizations and programs including the Environmental Action Group, Furman’s Engaged Living program (ECOS), and the Outdoor Club. The Environmental Action Group is a student led environmental group comitted to environmental stewardship and education; this year we are working with the administration and staff to develop a campus recycling master plan as well as coordinating and hosting a series of education and outreach events on campus recycling. Through my involvement in the Engaged Living ECOS program, where a cohort of students live together and take a series of environmental classes together, I have been working in the newly created campus organic garden. On weekends I am often out with the Outdoor Club exploring the great outdoors and pursuing my love of rivers. I am an avid kayaker and attended the World Class Kayak Academy in ’04-’05 and ‘07, where a group of students and teachers travel around the world in order to receive an education and paddle on the world’s best rivers. That experience allowed me to witness environmental degradation firsthand as we witnessed the buidling of several dams on the Salween and Yangtze Rivers in China, paddling through the rapids that would soon be destroyed. I attended Warren Wilson College during my freshman year and transferred to Furman as a sophmore. It has been exciting to be involved in the implementation and development of new sustainable practices here on campus.
