Fellow Profile
Kate Ekman
Northeastern Illinois University, IL
The purpose of the project is to assist Northeastern Illinois University in understanding and quantifying its environmental impact while focusing on steps to reduce it. The project involves conducting a greenhouse gas inventory using the Clean Air Cool Planet program, which will create measured benchmarks for the future. It also entails researching comparable schools' climate action plans and strategic plans for sustainability.
Northeastern Illinois University's Strategic Plan aims to establish environmental sustainability as a key element of its identity. The results of the project will give important insight to further develop the plan and provide data to support sustainable initiatives.
To create a culture of increased awareness and involvement, it is key for students, faculty, and staff to understand the parts they play in the environmental impact of day-to-day campus life. Another goal of the project includes presenting and publishing information to the university community to broaden understanding of environmental issues.
About the Fellow
Kate Ekman grew up in Delavan, Wisconsin -- a typical, small Midwestern factory town surrounded by agriculture. Exploring the outdoors as a child helped her develop a great appreciation for the environment. She hopes to inspire a similar interest in her niece and nephew by spending time in nature with them whenever possible.
Kate currently resides in Chicago and is working toward an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. Her participation in numerous student activities contributes to progress on environmental issues at the university. She became active with the Green Cycle Group environmental club during the successful campaign for a student-funded fee for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and conservation projects. She now serves as chair of the Green Fee Committee, which oversees funding of these projects. Additionally, she is treasurer of the Green Cycle Group and the College of Cycling bike club. She co-chaired the planning committee for the first annual Green Week. The events were organized to educate and involve the university community on environmental issues. While completing a Campus Sustainability Internship at the university, Kate works with Facilities Management, administrative departments, faculty, and student groups in the coordination of environmental initiatives. With the skills developed through her studies and student activities, Kate hopes to work professionally with universities seeking sustainable practices.
Over time, development consumed many acres of prairie, woods, and farmland surrounding her home town which contributed to a strong interest in land preservation. Her other interests include urban agriculture and environmental justice.
