Take a Goodbye Hike

Ramble around your neighborhood or take a trek in a park or the woods. No matter where you go, try to find signs of summer’s ends: How do the flowers look different? Are there any new ones? Are others gone? What about the leaves on the trees? Do you see more seeds on the trees than usual? What are the squirrels up to? Can you see different birds? How about people’s clothes? What seasonal changes can you find?

Create an Ode to Summer Art

Turn those summer memories into a sidewalk or driveway gallery. Use sidewalk chalk to draw big oval, square, and rectangular frames that your child can fill with favorite summer events. And, when the rain washes away the drawings, explain to your child that the pictures and summer may fade, but those memories will stick around for a long time.

Pack a Picnic

Give yourselves the gift of one more meal on a blanket. Pack your favorite summer foods in a basket and head to the park or backyard. While you’re enjoying lunch, remember some summer memories. What was the funniest thing that happened this summer? The most fun? The best surprise?

Some More Fond Farwells
  • If you live near a beach, grab a bucket and shovel and make one last sand castle for the year.
  • Have a block party so the whole neighborhood can celebrate the season.
  • Camp out in the backyard before the weather turns cold.
  • Treat yourself to summer’s most famous treat – ice cream.
