While walking along a pedestrian board walk in iSamangaliso Wetland Park, St. Lucia, South Africa, dozens of Ververt Monkeys stopped to greet us along the way. One female caught my eye because she seemed so hungry and was eating at a feverish pace. Upon closer inspection I found a newborn attached suckling on her breast. The youngster was as curious about me as I was of it. After a few moments, they both paused for their debut portrait that shows the afterbirth on the baby and on the mother’s tail and face. I can’t help to wonder if I am the first human this baby had ever seen. The shot was taken in October 2012, with a 70-200mm lens heand held.
