Boca Ciega Millennium Park, Seminole, Florida
Boca Ciega Millennium Park abuts the Intracoastal Waterway near Seminole, Florida. The park also has freshwater ponds and creeks. With these water resouces the park attracks numerous bird species including significant numbers of wading birds such as the Great American Egret. At low tide, wading birds forage on the mud flats of the Waterway. This Great American successfully caught this large fish - peerhaps too large - and flew onto the park grounds to try to consume it. We observed the bird dropping and dunking the fish into a tidal creek several times, and reposition the fish in the beak trying unsuccessfully to swallow the it. We watched for 25 minutes at which time the Great Amerian, with fish still unswllowed, move into the mangrove creek, out of our line of sight. We can only assume that the bird ultimtely was successful in difficult task.
