Royal Lake, Olympic National Park
After a hard backpack up to Royal Lake, there were swarms of these Chironomids dancing in the shafts of sunlight along Royal Lake, from which they had hatched. I decided to to a time exposure of the insects in flight, to capture the design of the swarm. If you look closely at the image magnified, you can see the pattern of wingbeats of some of the flies that are in the plane of sharp focus.
