Savegre, Costa Rica
Shy, intriguing and extremely beautiful, in the mountains of Savegre (Costa Rica) lives the Resplendent Quetzal. Associated with the "Snake God Quetzalcoatl", this bird was considered divine. Its iridescent green tail feathers, symbols for spring plant growth, were venerated by the ancient Aztecs and Maya, who viewed the quetzal as the "god of the air" and as a symbol of goodness and light. Unfortunately over the years their numbers have fallen considerably. I spent five days looking for this rare bird and had the opportunity to photograph just a couple. The challenge started in finding them, then trying to get close, they are very evasive and shy birds. After an intense search i found this male standing on the highest part of a tree just above the river, he was digesting a wild avocado fruit.
