I researched spotted hyenas for a year in the Masai Mara. One morning, while looking for hyenas, we came upon a pride of lions that had just recently killed a cape buffalo and were feeding on it. This young male had sustained some wounds, possibly during the hunt, or possibly while scrabbling over the food with some older males or lionesses. We kept a basic log on other carnivores for future conservation research, and therefore named all of the lions in the area (along with our hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards). The lions were all named after musicians, and this guy’s name is Freddy Mercury.
