Virunga National Park, Nord-Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo
I had the privilege to be one of the first non-rangers of Virunga National Park to go on a mountain gorilla trek in over a year this past April in Virunga National Park. The park is closed due to safety concerns. I took this photo of the silverback named Bageni in one of the rare instances where our eyes met, with no more than 10 feet separating us. It was a humbling experience to be able to capture this portrait of such a powerful animal in such a relaxed and calm pose.
