Central Park, New York City
New to New York, as I was when I encountered this red-tail feeding on a squirrel in Central Park, I did not know he is likely the famous "Pale Male", a long-time resident of the southern end of the park. A Park ranger told me he gets his nickname from his relatively-unmarked breast. My brother-in-law tells me "P.M" became a cause celebre a few years ago when an official attempt was made to destroy his nest. Park regulars refused to allow it, and it has not happened. He is quite habituated to humans; he carried on wth his feast while dozens of passersby stopped for an astonished look.
